Aim of tool/ Brief overall description
Aim of the tools:

    • enable contact and build a common ground in the group,
    • stress common views, use other differences,
    • find out what makes me special,
    • offer categories,
    • allow a cultural self awareness,
    • experiment with different sets of behavior.

    We wanted to collect testimonies in a real life situation.
    We were assuming that to collect these testimonies would help the students and teacher trainees to react spontaneously and that their reactivity would be much stronger.
    It is important for us to give our students and teacher trainees the opportunity to enter the problem by reacting to what they heard in one or more of the interviews.

Main methods

The teacher trainers will work with the trainees in small groups and they will have to choose if they will let them see one entire interview or all of them or if they will let them work on one question asked in the three interviews.
Another possibility would be to use one statement of the different interviews to work on with the trainees. It is important for us to start the work with the students or teacher trainees in letting them work individually and write down their reaction.

 

 

Description of the process and the possible stepping stones

We think that it is important to begin always by letting the students and the teacher trainees start with an individual writing, by asking them to write down everything they agree or disagree with, by asking them to write down anything they did find very interesting and by asking them to write down one personal opinion.
Five possibilities for the practical handling up to now:

    • work with only one interview,
    • work with the three interviews by looking and hearing them entirely before discussing about interculturality,
    • work with two or more interviews and work on the agreements and discrepancies they contain,
    • work on the answers to one of the questions asked in the three interviews,
    • extract one strong statement from the interviews, show it to the group of students or teacher trainees and ask them to write down their reaction individually.

     

    In our opinion this tool will allow to demonstrate that the question of interculturality is a very sensitive one which is strongly discussed in the world of education as well as outside of the educational world. This question goes much further as the notion of syllabus. This question will allow the teacher trainers to tackle the notion of values to be passed on and the definition of the trades of teachers with future teachers.
    The question of interculturality shows that everybody's experience of life takes a predominant part to allow everyone's entry in this problematic and that each one of us lives it in his daily life even if it is difficult to give a definition of the word interculturality.
    This way of working will allow us to let the students and teacher trainees observe that it is necessary to analyze one's own experience to be able to name the things and to learn something from it as a teacher.
